Max's All Stars upset #2 seed in 92Y playoffs

Tonight in the Fall 2011 92Y Adult Basketball League A-Division playoffs, Max's All Stars (seven seed), upset Team #8 Chris C - Orange (two seed) by a final score of 58-57. It was a dramatic victory for the team. Max's All Stars were in control for most of the first half, but fell behind by three in the second before Branden Gibson hit a bucket close up and drained a free throw to tie the game at 53 all. However, missed free throws prevented Max's All Stars from closing things out late. Team #8 got the ball back with 6.0 seconds remaining only down by one point, but Jamel Jackson missed a two-pointer for the win. The team played terrific defense all night and hit enough clutch shots to win. Corey Orgias, Ronnie Worthen Jr and Patrick James made major contributions. Mike Viola got the rebound on a missed free throw by Branden Gibson, put it back up for the game-winning shot and drew a foul (but missed the FT). Marvin Billups Jr and Reed Morgan supported the team in limited minutes.
It was ugly at times, but Max's All Stars persevered - winning their fourth straight game and advancing to the semi-finals on January 3rd.

Max's All Stars drop 92nd Street Y season opener

Max's All Stars lost their 92nd Street Y Adult Basketball League A-Division season opener last night by a final score of 95-75 against Team #4 Brandon A - Red. For the first couple of possessions, both teams were matching each other shot for shot. Then, Team #4 went on a run to push the lead into the twenties, almost thirties. Max's All Stars stalled offensively, going 1-on-1 too much and not establishing an offensive flow with good ball movement. Also, turnovers were a major killer that led to a lot of fastbreak opportunities for Team #4 as Max's All Stars struggled with transition defense all night.

Team #4 featured a lot of Division I talent, led by three ex-Manhattan College standouts: Brandon Adams (6'6", F/C), Darryl Crawford (6'4", G/F) and Nick Walsh (5'10", Guard) who were joined by former Fairfield Stags guard, Jonathan Han (23 points), and ex-NBDL standout, Cameron Benison (who led all scorers with 32 points), among others. Team #4 benefited from a lot of experience playing together for quite a few years now.

Max's All Stars definitely showed improvement in a lot of areas during the second half. Earl Mills, Corey Orgias, Branden Gibson, Josiah Peay and Reed Morgan started the game with Kevin Major coming off the bench. Patrick James joined the team for the second half.

Orgias and Peay led the way, finishing with 17 points each.

Fall 2011 Tri-Captains Named

Max's All Stars are proud to announce that Patrick James, Reed Morgan and Corey Orgias will serve as team Tri-Captains for the Fall 2011 season. P.J. is a three-time champion with Max's All Stars and the longest tenured member on the team.
Corey was also a Tri-Captain along with Marvin Billups and John Simmons at SUNY Purchase in 2010-2011.
Reed has proven to be the ultimate team player. The ex-Tufts guard plays with reckless abandon, driving to the basket against bigger players, finishing and drawing fouls. He was co-MVP of the Spring 2011 McBurney YMCA Adult Basketball League (with Daniel Phillips) and now will join James and Orgias as team Tri-Captains this season.

Monday, October 10, 2011

Max's All Stars win Summer 2011 season finale

Max's All Stars finished the Summer 2011 Basketball City Tuesday East A-Division season on a high note with a 78-65 win over the defending Spring champions, NECO. It was a very sloppy game full of turnovers and Max's All Stars are fortunate to have won. There is still a lot of room for improvement going forward, but the team is headed in the right direction.

Max's All Stars lose Summer 2011 Basketball City Tuesday East A-Division Opener

Max's All Stars lost their Summer 2011 Basketball City Tuesday East A-Division opener last night against the defending Spring 2011 champions, NECO, by a final score of 83-65. It was a close game in the first half, but things got out of hand early in the second half as NECO took control towards victory. Corey Orgias (22 points) and Jerrell Lewis (18 points) made their Max's All Stars debut. Nikola Djurdjevic came off the bench, provided a spark with his hustle and chipped in with 12 points. Reed Morgan scored 10 points as well. There were quite a few defensive miscues, missed layups, a couple of mishandled subs and a lot of 1-on-1 offense that need to be address going forward. However, the game was much closer than the score indicates and was encouraging, proving that Max's All Stars do have the talent to compete on this level.

Max's All Stars jump to Basketball City A-Division for Summer 2011

Coming off winning the Spring 2011 McBurney YMCA Adult Basketball League Championship, Max's All Stars have made a few roster changes. Key contributors Eric Olsen and Michael Klein along with long-time member, Darryl Harvey Jr, will not be returning for the upcoming summer league as the team transitions to a higher level of competition in the Basketball City A-Division.

Replacing them will be five friends of Patrick James:
  1. Former SUNY Purchase F/C, Corey Orgias (6'5"). Orgias was named to the 2009-10 All-Skyline Conference Men's Basketball Second Team and Player of the Week (3/1/2010). During his time with the Panthers, they won back-to-back Skyline Conference Tournaments (2010, 2011) and a regular season championship in 2010-2011. In 79 games over three seasons, Corey Orgias averaged 10.6 PPG and 6.8 RPG. Orgias transferred to SUNY Purchase (D-III) after one year at the University of New Haven (D-II) and played six games in the Spring 2011 Ramapo Amateur Basketball Association Adult Men's Spring League, averaging 25.3 PPG.
  2. Former SUNY Purchase PG, Jerrell Lewis (6'2"). Lewis signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball with the UNC-Charlotte 49ers (D-I) and spent two years on the team. He played alongside future NBA first round draft picks Rashad McCants at New Hampton Prep (where he spent four years, averaging 25 PPG and 7.0 APG as a senior) and Sebastian Telfair during his middle school years. Jerrell transferred to SUNY Purchase for the 2008-2009 season, averaging 18.4 PPG and 2.4 APG in 19 games.
  3. Former Berkeley Carroll G, Jason Lewis. Jerrell's brother, former high school teammate of Patrick James and Reed Morgan. Jason has played on numerous teams with his brother, Orgias, James and Morgan.
  4. Recent Williams College graduate, Troy Whittington. The 6'6" forward/center from Brooklyn averaged 10.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in 96 contests over four years of college. Coming out of Friends Seminary, Whittington had Division I offers from Ivy League schools before being recruited by Williams where he had an All American career.
  5. Former Dominican College basketball player and current SUNY Purchase assistant coach, Branden Gibson. The 6'5" forward was a two-year starting captain at Newburgh Free Academy (graduated 2002) and played four games in the Spring 2011 Ramapo Amateur Basketball Association Adult Men's Spring League, averaging 15.2 PPG.
Everyone else from this past spring will be returning to the team in attempt to win a fifth championship overall. The league will begin play in July 2011.

Max's All Stars get redemption over "Bouncers" in McBurney YMCA regular season finale

Max's All Stars ended the McBurney YMCA Adult Basketball League regular season with a redemption win over "Bouncers" by a final score of 62-51. The team played very well and overcame some rather poor officiating. King Pommells hit back-to-back 3 pointers in the 3rd quarter, Nikola Djurdjevic did a great job defending #3 for "Bouncers" (their best player) and the All Stars closed the game out after letting the opposition creep back within one point midway through the fourth quarter. Both teams clinched a first round bye in the playoffs. The teams split their regular season meetings (1-1), but Max's All Stars have a +9 head-to-head point differential.

Max's All Stars improve to 4-2 after a short-handed win over "Pippen Ain't Easy" by a final score of 65-48. Only six players suited up and took control of the game early. Midway through the second half, the game turned into a dunk contest as Mike Viola and Reed Morgan exchanged throw downs, but nothing highlight worthy. Head coach, Max Margulis, played significant minutes but failed to accumulate any statistics.

Point guard, Michael Klein, has been added to the roster and made his debut last night at the McBurney YMCA. Klein is the former high school teammate of Eric Olsen at Marlboro (NJ) and has played in various intramural basketball leagues over the years. He was a member of the "3 Balls" intramural team at the University of South Carolina in 2009 when they won the 5th annual South Carolina Intramural Recreational Sports Association (SCIRSA) State Palmetto Classic Extramural Basketball Tournament, resulting in an automatic bid to the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Regional Basketball Tournament where they reached the semi-finals and earned the Sportsmanship Award.

Max's All Stars drop to 3-2 after a double-forfeit loss at the McBurney YMCA

Max's All Stars drop to 3-2 after a double-forfeit loss at the McBurney YMCA. The game against "Underrated" ended after just three quarters with the score at 38-33 in favor of the opposition. However, Max's All Stars made an 11-0 run to end the period after being down by 16. Trash talking led to fighting between both squads and the fourth quarter of the game was called off after #16 on "Underrated" threw a punch towards Eric Olsen. #16 was immediately ejected and his status for the remainder of the season is unclear. Both teams received a double-forfeit loss and sit at 3-2 with three games remaining.

Missed FTs still plagued Max's All Stars and the team continued to struggle on defense at times, but Mike Viola and Eric Olsen showed signs of improvement. The roster is still a work in progress as players are shaking off rust and learning to trust each other more.

Max's All Stars suffer disappointing defeat in third game at McBurney YMCA

Max's All Stars drop to 2-1 at the McBurney YMCA after a sloppy loss to "Bouncers" by a final score of 47-45. Darryl Harvey, Jr. made his season debut, but the team played poorly on defense, missed a couple of crucial layups and struggled mightily at the free throw line. There were a few bad calls from the referees and the scorekeepers might have missed a couple of points on both sides after Max's All Stars went up 21-8 in the second quarter. #3 for the "Bouncers" had an excellent game, torching the defense all night.
Max's All Stars will be back at it next Tuesday against "Knights" at 8:30 PM.

Fall 2007 Recap

In Spring 2007, Margulis changed the name of his team to Max's Auerbachers (in honor of the late Boston Celtics legend, Arnold "Red" Auerbach) and competed in Hofstra Intramural 3v3 Basketball with Kaheem Evans and Edore Ohimor to improve their game. During that semester, the team acquired Ben "Maine" Leavitt (who later became the sixth man for the Fall 2007 squad). With many others filling in from time to time, Max's Auerbachers finished 7-3 and came up short in the first round of the Hofstra Intramural 3v3 Basketball playoffs.

Immediately following the Spring 2007 semester, Margulis made an offer to Anthony "Bogut" Vitolo, who accepted on September 11th, 2007. That very night at the Recreation Center, following the announcement of Vitolo joining Max's Auerbachers (along with Ohimor and Leavitt already on the roster) Jose Amor and Ethan Ruda agreed to return while Gary Chiang and Mike Shtifter were also added. Through Chiang's connections, Ian Van Doren and freshman forward, Fernando Signorelli, were also added to what became a crowded, but extremely talent roster. Kaheem Evans also returned to the team and appeared in a few games.
Max's Auerbachers finished 5-2 overall, with both losses coming against the eventual champions, United Nations. However, the team did end a long winning streak for the defending champion, Yung Gunz, in the semi-finals en route to reaching the championship game for the first time at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
