Max's All Stars led by as many as 18 at times during the game, but Team #3 kept battling back and narrowed the deficit to four points in the second half. With only five players, Max's All Stars jumped out to a fast start, leading by 8 midway through the first half. However, Team #2 battled back and went up by two points at halftime. In the second half, Max's All Stars settled down defensively, creating transition opportunities and aggressively attacking the basket using their height advantage. Branden Gibson, David Seagers, Mahamoud Jabbi, Patrick James and Ronnie Worthen Jr all put in excellent work, playing hard and working together for the victory.

Max's All Stars struggle offensively, fall to 4-2 at 92nd Street Y

Last Tuesday, November 20th, Max's All Stars suffered a tough loss against Team #1 - Ray Shields by a final score of 65-50. A week after lighting up the scoreboard for 100 points, Max's All Stars barely managed to score half that much this week. Corey Orgias, David Seagers, Jason Lewis, Mahamoud Jabbi, Marvin Billups Jr, Noah Levine, Patrick James and Ronnie Worthen Jr battled hard all night, but couldn't get going offensively. The team struggled to move the ball effectively, rebound and finish at the rim. Max's All Stars performed fairly well defensively, especially in the first half, but could not overcome their offensive ineffectiveness. The loss drops Max's All Stars to 4-2 on the season.

Seagers set the tone early, scoring 17 of the first 19 points for Max's All Stars. He was on fire! The whole team was! It was easily Max's All Stars' best showing of the season as they attacked the basket, knocked down shots all over the place, hustled on defense, blocked shots and rebounded well. Everyone contributed, grabbing control of the game early and putting together a near-flawless performance. With the win, Max's All Stars improve to 4-1 on the season.

Max's All Stars win first game after Hurricane Sandy, improve to 3-1 at 92nd Street Y

In their first game after Hurricane Sandy, Max's All Stars clawed out a victory against previously undefeated Team #2 - Eric Faltraco by a final score of 61-59. In the aftermath of the storm, all four A-Division teams struggled to find enough players for last night's games. Max's All Stars only had 5 players yet again. Mahamoud Jabbi, Marvin Billups Jr, Patrick James and Ronnie Worthen Jr were joined by Super Dave Seagers who triumphantly returned to action after a prolonged absence. Seagers looked rusty early on, but got going in the second half by attacking the basket. He was also very sharp defensively. Max's All Stars started the game down 7-0, but got things under control relatively quickly. Tied at 59 with 9.7 seconds remaining, Marvin Billups Jr drove to the basket, drew a foul and hit both free throws to put Max's All Stars ahead with 4.4 seconds remaining. Team #2 made one last attempt to force overtime, but Max's All Stars got the stop and prevailed. All five players (Seagers, Jabbi, Billups, James and Worthen) fought hard from start to finish, overcame a slow start, some questionable officiating and a lack of depth to earn an important victory and improve to 3-1 on the season.

Tied at 45 midway through the second half, Max's All Stars went on a 16-7 run to close things out. Despite only having five players and no subs available, Max's All Stars put together a solid offensive effort and a very impressive defensive performance en route to victory.

Max's All Stars struggle in OT loss at 92Y

Shorthanded again, Max's All Stars lost to Team #2 - Eric Faltraco by a final score of 65-61 in overtime. A slow start hurt Max's All Stars in the first half, but the boys battled back from a 12-point deficit to force OT. Horrendous officiating definitely contributed to the loss as the referees missed a number of fouls underneath the basket while making a couple of questionable calls on the other end. They also overlooked at least two 3-pointers (counting them as twos) among other miscues. However, the refs were only part of the problem as the range and quickness of Team #2's all guard lineup caused headaches for the bigger Max's All Stars squad. Branden Gibson, Corey Orgias, Marvin Billups Jr, Noah Levine, Patrick James and Ronnie Worthen Jr fought hard in the losing effort. It was an exciting game and hopefully, it will serve as a valuable learning experience for Max's All Stars going forward.

This forced head coach, Max Margulis into the lineup and he played 25 minutes, holding his own defensively and chipping in 2 points. Branden Gibson, Corey Orgias, Marvin Billups Jr and Patrick James carried the load and played extremely well. Greedy and Truck helped close things out. It was an all-around team effort and a great way to start the season.

In the second half, Max's All Stars stalled offensively and Team #3 capitalized - capturing the lead and not looking back. Angel Gonzalez, BJ Warrington, Corey Orgias, Darryl Crawford, Kevin Major, Marvin Billups Jr, Patrick James and Ronnie Worthen Jr battled all night long. Max's All Stars fall in Gun Hill semifinals

Max's All Stars fell to Tilden in the Gun Hill Classic Open Division semifinals by a final score of 72-66. Branden Gibson, Carlos Valdez, Corey Orgias, Kirk Williams, Marvin Billups Jr, Patrick James and Stefan Bonneau battled all game long, but could not overcome some atrocious officiating. The team settled for a few too many jumpshots, did not attack the basket enough at times and missed quite a few layups. Also, rebounding was an issue for most of the game. However, the team played hard all season long and deserves a lot of credit for their efforts and contributions. Even though Derrick Stanton, David Seagers, Kevin Young and Tim Morris missed this playoff game, they were very valuable members of the team this summer. Also, it is important to recognize guys like Darryl "Truck" Bryant and Kevin Major who came through to make guest appearances during the season. All of these men have represented Max's All Stars the right way and earned respect around the NYC basketball community.
Also, shout out to Carl Gibson for all his support on the sidelines this summer. He was a great deal of help as a coach and mentor. His guidance and leadership was invaluable.

Sloppy defense, insufficient rebounding, poor ball movement, missed layups and outside shots compounded by lousy officiating all contributed to the defeat. Max's All Stars drop to 1-1 at 92nd Street Y

Last night, Max's All Stars lost at the 92nd Street Y to Team #3 - Jesse Shapiro by a final score of 74-72. The team got off to a slow start, falling behind by as many as 12 points early in the first half. Neither team was at full strength, but Max's All Stars looked sloppy throughout. In the second half, Max's All Stars battled back and played better, but the comeback bid fell short. Team #3 played hard, using an extremely effective pick and roll offense while also hitting a number of timely shots from 3-point land. The officiating was very poor, making quite a few questionable calls. The referees looked confused a couple times throughout the contest and even called a technical foul on Coach Max Margulis, the first of his career (176 games). John Simmons served as a guest assistant coach while BJ Warrington and Darryl Crawford (26 points) made their season debuts. They were joined by the regulars: Angel Gonzalez, Corey Orgias, Kevin Major, Marvin Billups Jr and Patrick James. In the second half, Max's All Stars hung out on the perimeter too much, not moving the ball well or attacking the basket enough and Coach Margulis mishandled some substitutions. In addition, the team turned the ball over a little bit too much and struggled defensively. Carlos Valdez and Stefan Bonneau made their season debuts and were joined by returners from last week: Branden Gibson, Corey Orgias, Derrick Stanton, Gerald Clark, Jeremy Brown, Marvin Billups Jr, Patrick James and Tim Morris. The loss drops Max's All Stars to 1-1 at Gun Hill this summer.

Instead of a Fall 2011 92Y Adult Basketball League A-Division Championship Game rematch, Max's All Stars faced a team of last minute replacement players and won by a final score of 80-63. Kevin Young made a guest appearance, replacing Dave Seagers in the lineup. Angel Gonzalez and Kevin Major made their Spring 2012 debut and were joined by Branden Gibson, Corey Orgias, Marvin Billups Jr (who threw down quite a few impressive dunks), Mike Viola and Patrick James. It was a sloppy win against a team no one expected to face, but an important W and a fun evening nonetheless.

Max's All Stars add two new players leading up to Spring 2012 season

Max's All Stars fell just short of winning a championship in Fall 2011, but are gearing up for big things in Spring 2012. The team will be adding two new players to the roster.

First off, Michael Orock from Wagner College. The 6'7"/233 lbs big man has a solid Division I background, having played 110 games, staring 50 with career averages of 4.3 PPG, 3.1 RPG and 0.6 BPG. Orock's best statistical season came as a senior in 2009-2010 when he averaged 10.5 PPG, 6.23 RPG and 1.06 BPG. He is big, strong and expected to provide a dominating presence down low.

Also joining the roster will be former Dowling College standout, David Seagers (otherwise known as "Super Dave"). Seagers briefly played with Angel Gonzalez at Dowling and is familiar with everyone on the roster. He has big game experience in college and high-level leagues such as Nike Pro City and Dyckman. "Super Dave" usually plays for the famed Bodysnatchers Basketball Team, but will be joining Max's All Stars for the time being. Seagers averaged 17.0 PPG, 5.54 RPG and 2.98 APG in 109 career games at Dowling and should provide stability and explosiveness to Max's All Stars.

Max's All Stars receiving tons of support during playoff run

It should noted that Max's All Stars have received a lot of support going into the Fall 2011 92Y Adult Basketball League A-Division Championship Game last night and leading up to the NY Alumni Sports playoffs. Players have been inviting friends, family and girlfriends to games all season. Last night, they were instrumental in creating a home game atmosphere. Also, Lorenzo Cowell from Team #1 Eric F - Royal Blue and outgoing league director, Mike Gordon, were among a few in the 92Y Adult Basketball League community to wish the team good luck before the big game last night. Max's All Stars have become rather well known around the May Center for Health, Fitness & Sport, even picking up a few fans at aerobics alley. The team is greatly appreciative of and looking forward to continued support and success in the upcoming NY Alumni Sports playoffs and beyond.

Max's All Stars fall just short of winning 92Y championship in OT

Max's All Stars suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss in the Fall 2011 92Y Adult Basketball League A-Division Championship Game by a final score of 66-63 against Team #4 Brandon A - Red. There was a lot of questionable officiating and it seems as though the scorers table did not keep an accurate track of fouls, especially in the case of Corey Orgias who was definitely given an extra foul that never happened. It was a back and forth seesaw battle which saw Max's All Stars battle back from a 9-point second half deficit to take a 5-point lead in the final 2+ minutes. However, Team #4 would not go quietly and took the lead by two with 0.9 seconds remaining. After Team #4 missed a free throw, Branden Gibson grabbed the rebound and called timeout with Max's All Stars trailing 61-59. The clock wound down, but 0.3 seconds was put back on by the refs. Max's All Stars inbounded the ball to Marvin Billups Jr who tried to tip a shot in but was fouled. After much confusion, he went to the line and calmly sank both free throws in the clutch to tie things up. The refs put 0.1 seconds on the clock for Team #4, but it was not enough time and the game went to overtime where Billups would strike first to give Max's All Stars the lead by two. However, with the opportunity to go up by four points, Billups drove to the basket, went up with a shot and was pushed in the air, but no call was made. Team #4 would go on to tie the game and take the lead on FTs. Down by three with a few seconds to go, Max's All Stars could not get a shot off and the game ended.
Throughout the season, so many players contributed to the team - Angel Gonzalez (the man who calmed the offense down and improved the ball movement), Branden Gibson (the versatile veteran combo guard/forward), Corey Orgias (the emotional leader and go-to-guy), Eric Olsen (as a player and coach), Josiah Peay (who appeared in 9 games throughout the season), Kevin Major (who sank tons of clutch FTs), Marvin Billups Jr (who returned from Puerto Rico with a chip on his shoulder and performed like the professional he is), Mike Viola (with his inside/out game, worked his way back into shape and became an important contributor), Patrick James (with his shutdown defense, hustle and rebounding), Reed Morgan (who attacked the basket relentlessly) and Ronnie Worthen Jr (providing a big physical presence and working hard down low). Everyone worked hard to turn things around and reach the championship game. Max's All Stars finish the Fall 2011 92Y Adult Basketball League A-Division season with a 4-7 record (2-1 in the playoffs).
The Fall 2011 season is not over yet as Max's All Stars must now focus on the NY Alumni Sports Adult Basketball League playoffs where they won their division and clinched the #2 overall seed. The team will be without head coach, Max Margulis, for their second playoff run of the season. However, Eric Olsen will be counted on to take them home with his leadership skills and vast knowledge of the game. Anthony Hardison will be taking Flip video highlights of the games as well. Also, Jermaine Lewis rejoined the team for the last two 92Y playoff games and his help coaching the team was invaluable. He is a huge supporter of Max's All Stars and will be there with Eric Olsen to help lead the team in the NY Alumni Sports playoffs.

Max's All Stars upset #1 seed in 92Y playoffs

Tonight in the Fall 2011 92Y Adult Basketball League A-Division playoffs, Max's All Stars (seven seed), upset Team #1 Eric F - Royal Blue (one seed) by a final score of 60-54. It was a total team effort from start to finish. Max's All Stars were in control in the first half, going up 26-21 until the opposition went on a 10-0 run to take a five-point halftime lead. However, Marvin Billups Jr scored the first five points of the second half to tie things up and Max's All Stars kept the intensity up en route to victory. The team improved at the free throw line, helping close things out late. Corey Orgias, Branden Gibson, Kevin Major, Angel Gonzalez and Patrick James (who played suffocating defense throughout the game) all hit clutch free throws in the second half. Ronnie Worthen Jr, Reed Morgan, Mike Viola and Eric Olsen also made solid contributions to the big win.
It was hard fought, but Max's All Stars persevered - winning their fifth straight game and advancing to the championship on January 10th.
