Max's All Stars Youth Basketball Program

On September 20th, Max's All Stars played their final game of 2015 - repeating as undefeated ABC Hoops champions. One month later, on October 18th, Max's All Stars started hosting youth basketball workouts on Sundays at P.S. 64 Robert Simon School (600 East 6th Street, New York, NY, 10009). The workouts begin promptly at 1:15 PM and usually last about two or three hours. It's free for first time participants and costs $5 for returning players. So far we have hosted seven workouts and they've been very successful. During those workouts Max’s All Stars had 23 total participants between the ages of 11-17 years old. Our coaches - Corey Orgias, Jason Lewis, Jerrell Lewis, Marvin Billups Jr, Patrick James and Troy Whittington among others - did some strength and conditioning warm-ups, ran important drills to teach the fundamentals and ended each workout with a competitive scrimmage. We are encouraged by the progress our coaches and players have made each week so far.

Max's All Stars intends to continue hosting workouts on Sundays for the foreseeable future and hopes to join leagues/tournaments in early-2016. Tomorrow we will host an intrasquad scrimmage and next Sunday, December 20th we will host a scrimmage game against the East Side Escalades.

Max's All Stars suffer heartbreaking first round playoff loss at West 4th

Max's All Stars lost their first round playoff game at Kenny Graham's West Fourth Street vs Black Top by a final score of 93-92 in overtime. Despite being severely shorthanded, Max's All Stars battled back from a 20-point deficit in the second quarter to only be down by three points at halftime (47-44). In the second half, Max's All Stars battled but could not overcome absolutely atrocious officiating. Late in the game, the momentum started swinging towards Max's All Stars. The team started knocking down shots & the game turned into a seesaw affair. When one team would score, the other answered immediately. There were several lead changes in the fourth quarter and overtime - but the referees destroyed any chance Max's All Stars had of winning the game with several missed/highly questionable calls. Branden Gibson, Corey Orgias, Elon Howard, Patrick James, Shereef Taylor and TJ Curry fought and worked so hard to win this game. Despite the bitterly disappointing and painful loss, Max's All Stars will learn from this and build on it. Thank you to everyone who competed for Max's All Stars at West 4th this summer. It is greatly appreciated.

Yesterday, Max's All Stars got the win at Kenny Graham's West Fourth Street vs Ice Tea by a final score of 93-78. Branden Gibson, Devon Curry, Marvin Billups Jr, Rob Thomas, Shaun Diaz, Shereef Taylor, TJ Curry and Troy Whittington played smart team basketball and all contributed to earn the W. They worked hard, battled on the boards and did the little things necessary to win. It was a back and forth battle for the first three quarters as neither team could get more than five points of separation on the scoreboard, but in the fourth quarter Max's All Stars turned it up defensively and that led to some opportunities in transition that helped put the game away. TJ Curry did a great job the whole game and really stepped up in the fourth quarter with a number of clutch baskets and great defensive play. Branden Gibson did his job as the glue guy getting everyone involved and being a vocal leader. Shaun Diaz did a terrific job defensively guarding his man, especially in the fourth quarter. Rob Thomas and Troy Whittington controlled the paint, grabbing rebounds and scoring underneath whenever Max's All Stars really needed a bucket. Shereef Taylor and Marvin Billups Jr contributed with some important baskets as well. Max's All Stars did all this despite some horrendous officiating, but that did not matter in the end. It was an all-around team effort. The real Max's All Stars showed up and won an important game, improving our record to 4-3.

Akeem Brightman, Bediako Nyasa, Bryant Crowder, Corey Orgias, Patrick James, Richard Starling and TJ Curry struggled at times, going down by as many as 19 points - but they battled back in the fourth quarter and nearly completed the comeback win. Unfortunately, sloppy play in the earlier parts of the game, especially in the 3rd quarter, made the hole too big to comeback from. Max's All Stars drop to 3-3 at West 4th.

Max's All Stars fall to 3-2 at West 4th

Yesterday, Max's All Stars lost a tough game at Kenny Graham's West Fourth Street vs Higher Ground by a final score of 98-95. Akeem Brightman, Bediako Nyasa, Bryant Crowder, Corey Orgias, Elon Howard, Patrick James, Rob Thomas and Shereef Taylor played hard and had opportunities to put the game away, but let Higher Ground hang around.  Max's All Stars beat themselves with sloppy play, poor ball movement and turnovers on offense. Also, lack of defensive rebounding hurt the team as Higher Ground kept outworking Max's All Stars, grabbing offensive rebounds, going back up and getting to the free throw line. It was a very disappointing loss for Max's All Stars, but something to learn from and build on.

Bediako Nyasa, Bryant Crowder, Corey Orgias, Dominique Jones, Joshua Smith, Kwabena Brenya, Patrick James and Prentice Small all contributed and played well to earn the W. In the first half, Max's All Stars only had five players. It was a back and forth seesaw battle again, but Max's All Stars took a slim one-point lead at halftime (38-37). Luckily, reinforcements arrived in the second half as Bryant Crowder, Joshua Smith and Prentice Small showed up. Crowder and Smith helped ignite the team in the third as Max's All Stars finally got some separation on the scoreboard. For the second straight game, Bediako Nyasa hit a half-court buzzer beating 3-pointer - this time at the end of the 3rd quarter to give Max's All Stars a 63-50 lead. Corey, Kwabena and PJ did some very good work getting a lot of rebounds and playing strong defense. Domo was the go-to scorer all game long. Max's All Stars improve to 2-1 at West 4th

Yesterday, Max's All Stars got the win at Kenny Graham's West Fourth Street vs TNP by a final score of 80-76. Bediako NyasaBryant Crowder, Corey Orgias, Damion Staple, Malik Reddick, Patrick James and Spencer Smith put forth an impressive effort against the defending Nike Pro City champions. Max's All Stars was shorthanded and some of the players were tired from playing in the ABC Hoops semifinals/championship game doubleheader earlier. It was a back and forth seesaw battle between the two teams. Nobody could get much separation on the scoreboard - neither team had a lead of more than five points. Bryant Crowder had an electrifying performance, carrying the offense while also pulling down a bunch of rebounds and blocking several shots. Corey, Damion, PJ and Spencer played the bulk of the game with Bryant. Corey and Spencer took turns bringing the ball up and both hit some very clutch shots. Damion and PJ did a great job defensively. In fact, Damion came up with two huge breakaway steals that he took to the house himself. Also, Bediako Nyasa played a few minutes and scored seven points including a half-court buzzer beating 3-pointer to give Max's All Stars the lead at halftime (40-37). Late in the fourth quarter, Corey hit a shot to make the score 80-76 with 1:50 remaining and instantly after his shot went in it started raining cats and dogs! So, the game was called with 1:50 remaining, Max's All Stars got the win and improved their record to 2-1.

Chu Maduabum, Corey Orgias, David Seagers, Dominique Jones, Doug Herring, Joshua Smith, Patrick James and Troy Whittington all played hard - but the team struggled in the 4th quarter. Overall, it's something to build on for Max's All Stars. The talent is there, just gotta clean up some of the mistakes and continue working hard.

Max's All Stars TBT 2015 Campaign

Max's All Stars is 40 votes behind for 18th place in the Northeast region for The Basketball Tournament. Only the top-18 teams get an automatic bid. After that, there will be 6 at-large bids chosen by TBT. I am writing this post to campaign for one of the six TBT at-large bids in the Northeast region (in the event that we do not automatically qualify).

I feel that Max's All Stars deserves to be one of the 6 at-large teams for TBT 2015 not only based on the number of votes we have and how hard we worked to get in this year, but last year too. Max's All Stars has supported The Basketball Tournament since day one in 2014. As soon as we heard about TBT on February 28th, 2014 - we knew our team wanted to be part of it. Unfortunately, last year we were not able to get into TBT. However, this year our team made an all out push to get in from the moment polls opened on April 1st, 2015 and we became eligible on April 17th, 2015. In terms of loyalty to The Basketball Tournament and respect for the process, Max's All Stars is one of the more deserving teams for the honor of playing in TBT.

Max's All Stars is a great promoter of The Basketball Tournament as well. Since this process began on April 1st, 2015 - our team has posted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram constantly to recruit votes and promote TBT. We also have a website that mentions TBT and a YouTube Channel as well. One of the great things about Max's All Stars is how organized and professionally run this team is. We have the ability to promote our team and TBT in a very professional way - not like an ordinary streetball team.

Our team also tells a compelling story. To grow from a Hofstra Rec and Intramural Sports team and evolve to become Hofstra Club Basketball then eventually turn that into an unlimited pro/am team that competes in some of the most legendary leagues/tournaments around NYC is the stuff movie scripts are written about. This team is constantly on the rise and has a very proud history.

Max's All Stars roster boasts some tremendous talent as well. Veteran semi-professional basketball stars such as Branden Gibson and Kevin Pegram. Former Purchase College legends, Corey Orgias and Marvin Jr Billups. Overseas professionals Damion Staple, Dominique Jones, Doug Herring, Roscoe Johnson Jr. and Troy Whittington. Also, we feature Hofstra Club Basketball legend, Patrick James. The great thing about this roster is not just how skilled they are on the basketball court, but how close the core of this team is off the court. It's not often that you see that type of unity in a tournament like this. A lot of teams are just stars thrown together for a chance at $1,000,000 - but for Max's All Stars, getting into TBT is much bigger than that.

Hopefully, the TBT selection committee takes this into account. Thank you.
